An Exploration of Clinician Perceptions of Patient Economic Status and Plan of Care: A Codman Card Study
Future Research
Our study generates a number of interesting questions for future study:
- In the clinician’s office, how much time is required to accurately ascertain patients’ socioeconomic status as it relates to their ability to afford therapies?
- Do clinicians’ medication prescription habits change according to perceived patient socioeconomic status levels?
- Would explicit queries about socioeconomic status make patients feel uncomfortable and prevent the clinician from understanding the patients’ ability to finance their healthcare? Would these queries detract from or enhance the clinician-patient relationship?
- If clinicians recognize a financial burden associated with treatment, how do they incorporate this information when formulating a treatment plan? How might this change in plan be assessed and compared to patient adherence in treatment plans that did not incorporate patient financial restrictions?
